The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently issued an alert on the use of prescription testosterone treatments due to potential cardiac risks including heart attacks, strokes, and even death. An investigation to further evaluate these risks as well as to determine the overall safety of these products is now underway.
At this time, it has been recommended that physicians use more caution when prescribing any testosterone medications. Several testosterone lawsuits have already been filed against Abbott Laboratories and AbbVie Inc.
Why Are Testosterone Treatments Prescribed?
Testosterone is the male hormone produced in the testes. It helps to maintain muscle strength, bone density, sex drive, sperm production and fertility. When the testes fail to produce adequate levels of testosterone it is called hypogonadism. Prescription testosterone treatments are only approved by the FDA for use in men who have documented absent or low levels of testosterone caused by a medical condition such as a genetic failure or chemotherapy. Due to the natural decline of testosterone as men age, many men have recently begun taking the testosterone replacement therapy to combat the effects of aging.
